PARIS Rowan County’s evening in Paris on Saturday almost became hours of ecstasy.
Instead, Bourbon County won its second straight Kentucky 2A Section 5 Tournament title, 57-53, behind Brycen Collins’s 19 points and Amirion Joyce’s 17.
Rowan County (12-6) coach Shawn Thacker was proud of his team. He should be: Mason Moore led everyone with 27 points, Chase Alderman added 17, and the Vikings overcame a 33-18 deficit late in the second quarter.
Rowan County’s night was agonizing for one reason. After Moore’s bucket gave the Vikings a 51-50 lead with 51 seconds to go, Bourbon County (15-2) finished with a 7-2 run.
Collins hit a 3-pointer with about 40 seconds left put the Colonels ahead to stay at 5351. He said there was no particular plan to get him the ball.
“Honestly, I just had an open shot, and I shot it,” Collins said. “As soon as I shot it, I knew it was gonna go in.”
Bourbon County coach Lamont Campbell, meanwhile, considers himself pretty much a figurehead. The real leader – 1-year-old daughter Layia, whom Campbell held in his right arm.
“Princess Layia,” Campbell said. “Them girls, they melt your heart.”
If for no other reason, Campbell didn’t want to talk to his team for a few minutes.
“It’s just basketball, it’s basketball things,” Campbell said. “When you come out and you take a 13-point lead (the Colonels were ahead, 3320 at halftime), you want to do things right, but today’s kid gets complacent. They’ll learn from it.”
After Collins’s 3-pointer gave the Colonels a 53-51 lead, Bourbon County re-Joyced. Nakyir, better known as “Scrap,” and Amirion (17 points) each converted 1-and-1s over the final 30 seconds.
Rowan County continues 61st District play Tuesday at Fleming County. Thacker said his team passed some tests.
“Defensively, we’re pretty good,” Thacker said. “Our kids fought, I thought we rebounded the ball really well. We’ve just got to clean out some ball-handling stuff; we’re getting better, but we’ve gotta get it to another level.”
