The Vikings soccer programs put on a show for their home crowd as host to the 61st District tournament last Tuesday night.
The boys defeated Menifee County 7-0 in the night’s first game and the girls’ 9-0 victory against the Menifee Lady Wildcats followed.
Nicholas Eastham broke open the scoring with a goal in the sixth minute of the Vikings game. Eastham scored two goals in the postseason opener to open and close the night. It was his fourth and fifth goals of his senior season.
Junior forward Dilan Maxey continued strong into the postseason also scoring two goals. Maxey scored off a corner kick from Chase Alderman in the 33rd minute and in the 39th minute after a ball crossed by Lucas Hart, intended for Alderman who headed the ball, ended up bouncing parallel to the goal line. Maxey got a head on the bounce to put it past the Wildcats keeper.
The Vikings went into the second half with a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Hart got the Vikings on the board during the second half with a goal off a through ball from Eastham in the 43rd minute and Aiden Leuenberger scored his eighth goal of the season in the 49th minute.
Leuenberger’s corner kick in the 65th minute led to Eastham’s second goal and the last goal of the night for the boy’s first round games. The Vikings played Fleming County for the Championship Thursday night.
The Vikings shutout marked the fourth complete game shutout for senior keeper Kellen Tabor.
Promise Cross highlighted the girls’ game with her 100th career goal. Cross entered the postseason with 27 goals and needed just three more to make Lady Vikings history.
“We had to come out focused and ready to play regardless of who we were playing. I think we started off with that in mind and put us up early. Audrey (Evans)’s goal really got us going,” said Cross.
Cross notched off all three goals in the first round of the postseason. She scored in the ninth minute, the 24th minute and the 43rd minute to break ground for the Lady Vikings program. Cross is the first Lady Viking to score 100 career goals.
Cross’ 100th goal was scored off a through ball from Aurey Evans. Evans scores the first goal of the night in the seventh minute off the pass from Cross.
“It took me longer than I thought it would tonight. I had plenty of shots, but it is gonna happen when it is gonna happen. I wasn’t really going to stress it,” said Cross.
Cross also assisted Maegan Gonzalez’ goal in the 53rd minute. Gonzalez, the Lady Vikings primary keeper, came out of the net and relinquished the complete game shutout for the opportunity to score in one of her last games with the Vikings program.
Gonzalez, senior keeper, has been guarding the net for the Lady Vikings since her freshman year. It wasn’t until this season stepped onto the offensive side of the game. Her goal in the first round of the 61st District game was her fourth career goal.
Casey Moore, Kelsey Lewis, Kaitlyn Makenzie and Haven Ford split the remaining goals.
Kaitlyn Hilton nearly got the Vikings ninth goal in the 67th minute as she rang one off the crossbar from 20 yards out.
Ford closed out the night for the Lady Vikings scoring in the 75th minute.
