Both the Rowan County boys’ and girls’ swim teams began their seasons on successfully as the Lady Vikings dominated their quad meet, while the boys eased past St. Patrick in a pair of home competitions last Tuesday.

In both cases Rowan County more than doubled the point total of its opponents. The Lady Vikings finished with 552 points, followed by Fleming County with 225 points, St. Patrick with 149 points and Deming with 40 points. The Vikings scored 404.5 points to St. Patrick’s 63.

Rowan County won both the boys’ and girl’s 4x50-yard medley relay events. Kimmie Conn, Morgan Cyrus, Emma Newton and Rachael McClain teamed to capture the girls’ race in 2:23.10. The boys’ team of Justin Skaggs, Luke McClain, Ty Alderman and Clay Cyrus completed their race in a time of 2:12.10.

The same Viking quartet also won the boys’ 4x50-yard freestyle relay in 1:49.11, while the girls’ added the 4x100-yard free relay to their victory list with a team that included Veronica Skaggs, Emma Newton, Morgan Cyrus and Conn. The Lady Viking foursome clocked a 4:52.89.

Rowan County’s girls won five individual races, including a pair from Newton (200-yard individual medley in 2:47.07 and 100-yard free in 1:05.66) and Veronica Skaggs (200-yard free in 2:40.54 and 500-yard free in 7:16.92). Conn also brought home the win in the 100-yard backstroke (1:24.27).

Morgan Cyrus also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:32.13.

On the boys’ side, Justin Skaggs and McClain were individual winners, capturing the 200y IM (2:31.10) and 100y free (1:00.38), respectively.

Clay Cyrus, Branham Littleton and Alderman combined for five runner-up finishes. Cyrus was second in the 200-yard free (2:05.59) and 500-yard free (6:05.38), while Littleton achieved the feat in the 50-yard free (29.06) and 100y back (1:27.23). The Vikings went one-two in the 100y free as McClain won the event and Alderman finished right behind in 1:08.99.

Rowan County remains at home for its next two meets, this Thursday and then Thursday, Dec. 13, before traveling to Ashland just after the start of the new year. The Vikings and Lady Vikings host their final meet of the season on January 8, before wrapping up the regular season at Johnson Central on January 17. The regionals will be held on January 30 and the state meet on February 8 in Louisville.
