The Morehead State softball team completed its second consecutive Ohio Valley Conference series sweep Sunday, defeating Eastern Illinois 4-2. The Eagles won their 10th straight game, improved to 29-14 overall and 11-7 in the OVC, and moved into sole possession of second place in the league standings.

The Eagles jumped on top early as Bri Jones led off with a double to left center. Two batters later, Rebecca Butler drilled a double to the wall in left center field to push Jones across. Butler moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored to make it 2-0 when Bianca Cardenas drilled a hit off third baseman's Kiley Holtz's outstretched glove. The hit sent EIU starter Kathleen Jacoby to an early exit from the circle.

The Panthers answered in the bottom of the first. Sarah Coppert led off with a single to center field. The ball was misplayed by Courtney Seiler in the field and rolled all the way to the wall. Denee Menzione slapped a hit up the middle to score Coppert.

MSU got a two-out rally and was able to increase its lead to 4-1 in the top of the third. Kayla Brill crushed a two-run triple to the wall in right field. It scored Butler and Cardenas, who had reached on a single and a walk, respectively.

The Panthers loaded the bases off Gjevre in the bottom of the fifth but only were able to tally one run. Holtz grounded out to short to push across a run, but Gjevre got two hitters to strike out to thwart the threat.

Jones and Butler each had two hits to pace MSU's eight-hit offensive day.

Gjevre ran her record to 21-7, picking up all three wins in the series. She recorded six strikeouts.

MSU's next action is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21st against Ball State. The doubleheader will be held at the Rowan County High School field and begin at 5 p.m. EST.
