On the brink of the 2012-2013 high school basketball season kicking off, the Rowan County Middle School seventh grade team has already gotten its first taste of action.

The team defeated Menifee County last night, 43-2, to dominantly grab its first win of the year.

A 12-0 first quarter lead for the Vikings swelled to 31-0 by the time the third period had ended, keeping the Wildcats off the scoreboards until the final period.

Scoring was as balanced as a coach could hope, with Nick Tiedeman and Tyler Gardner leading the way six points apiece, Kyle Gammon, Caleb Flyod and Austin McClain with five, John Nickell and Cody Lewis with four points, Matt Gagliano and Braxton Ward with three points and Brandon Mason with two points.

Coach Randy Wallace said it was a solid first effort for his team.

“You really can’t say anything too negative when you have a game like this one,” Wallace said. “We feel like we really have a pretty talented group this year and hopefully that will equal a lot of wins for us.”
