Claudia Hicks, affectionately known as “Chick,” an accomplished coach at Rowan County Senior High School, died Friday, Aug. 2, after a brief illness. She was 71.
Hicks retired from RCSHS where she taught science, mainly chemistry, for 32 years.
She served as the high school's first sanctioned girls basketball team coach and was named EKC Coach of the Year nine times and All Area Coach three times.
Hicks was selected to coach the first Kentucky/Ohio All-Star Girls Basketball game, which Kentucky won in overtime.
Inducted into numerous halls of fame, she served as high school athletic director for 12 years and two terms on the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Board of Control.
The gym floor at RCSHS was dedicated in her honor in 2015.
Dozens of her former students and student-athletes posted remembrances of Hicks on social media immediately following her death.
“She was the woman who taught many young women to take a stand for what they believed in … mostly themselves,” said one post.
“You were a wonderful educator and even better person,” said another. “Heaven is a brighter place tonight.”
