Substance abuse treatment has been show to save $7.46 in jail costs, court costs, etc., for every $1 spent. By the latest calculation, over 4.3 million Americans - age 12 and over - have received treatment for substance abuse. Just to give a frame of reference, in the 2010 Census, Kentucky reported having just over 4.3 million people.
It is estimated that less than 10% of people who have a substance abuse problem receive treatment. The 90% are untreated. The cost of untreated substance abuse exceeds $300 BILLION each year. Costs to businesses are estimated to be $100 billion annually, including increased accidents, increased health care costs, and lost productivity. These costs are passed by business on to the consumers of their products and services – us!
For every federal and state dollar spent on managing the consequences of addiction, on 1.9 cents are spend on prevention and treatment – with less than one-fourth of that being spent on prevention. In terms of dollars, for every $1 spent on prevention and treatment directly, state and federal government spends $60 in public programs that respond to the consequences of substance abuse.
