September is here, and that means it’s the month when public libraries across the nation come together to encourage people to sign up for a library card.

“Library Card Sign-up Month”  began in 1987 as an American Library Association campaign to remind people that a library card is “the smartest card” you can carry.

This September, when you sign up for a library card, you will be given a coupon from the Friends of the Rowan County Public Library that lets you select a free book from the Friends Book Store. The Friends Book Store has always had a wide selection of books for sale at a great price. The money they make is used to fund library programs and events.

Your Rowan County Public Library is a valuable resource that offers you books, CDs, DVDs, and magazines to borrow, as well as wireless internet access for computer use—we even provide the computers, both desktops and laptops.  The library and our community partners offer a wide variety of programs and activities. Meeting rooms and study rooms are available for you use. The library truly is your community place.

It’s so easy to sign up for your new library card. Just complete a brief form and present a photo identification card. Your card makes it possible to use the library resources on site. And, it also makes it possible to use our online catalog and a wide variety of online databases that the library subscribes to from wherever you have internet access.

So, come on over to Beacon Hill Drive and get your new library card and a coupon for a free book from the Friends Book Store.
