Hello, City of Morehead. For the next few months you will find my articles focusing on the different departments found within city government. This month let’s turn our attention towards the Parks and Recreation department.

I am proud to announce that Matt Hamilton has been named the new Director for Parks and Recreation. Mr. Hamilton has innovative and progressive ideas for how the city can grow recreation as well as serve all age groups within the community.

His vision is this, “To create and sustain thriving parks and public recreation facilities. To improve the quality of life for our citizens, of all ages, and to build an overall park system for present and future generations to be proud of.”

There are several ongoing projects within this department. The Sheltowee Falls Splash Pad is near completion. Parks and Recreation is working closely with engineers and contractors to bring you the best experience possible. We hope to have a grand opening in the coming weeks.

The Laughlin Health Building will be open to the public in June 2019, as part of our joint commitment between Rowan County Fiscal Court and the City of Morehead. Community members are welcome to come use the basketball and racquetball courts, indoor batting cages, party rental rooms, and classrooms.

For private events and rental of both Laughlin and the splash pad, as well as one of our many shelters located at Don Greenhill City Park, Rodburn Park and the Morehead Memorial Tree Walk contact the Parks and Recreation main office.

Don’t forget to visit the dog park located at the end of Don Greenhill City Park in addition to our new BocceBall and Croquet courts located beside the newly resurfaced basketball courts and playground equipment.

Our Parks and Recreation Department remains focused on maintaining and building upon our day to day programs, including little league baseball and softball, volleyball, soccer, football, and basketball. There are plans of adding more program opportunities to be held in our growing facilities.

If the Parks and Recreation Department can be of assistance to you please contact them at any time. We are excited to see where the future takes Parks and Recreation within our community.
