Have you thought about learning another language--maybe for a trip, for self-improvement, to improve your employment options, or, just for the fun of it? If so, you need to explore your Rowan County Public Library’s Language Learning Center powered by Mango Languages.

Go to rowancountylibrary.org and scroll down to the list of accessible online databases and select “Mango Languages.” Use your 14-digit library card number to identify yourself as a Rowan County Public Library patron. You may log in as a guest without a password, or you may create your personal profile by entering a password of your choice. You need no installation or downloads to use Mango Languages, but your computer must have the latest version of Adobe Flash (which you can upgrade for free from Adobe’s website).

Select from more than thirty language choices and decide whether you wish to learn basic skills for polite conversation or whether you wish to take the in-depth comprehensive course. Either way, the teaching methodology makes learning fun. You can work at your own speed and from any place you may be with Internet access.

Mango’s interactive tools are intuitive and interactive, and they deliver practical conversational skills and valuable cultural insight for a foreign language. Lessons include strategically placed memory-building exercises that help you remember what you are learning in addition to critical thinking exercises which help you intuitively understand the language and adapt it to similar conversations.

How long, you ask, will it take me to learn a new language with Mango? The instruction is completely self-paced; the time it takes to build fluency in a language differs from person to person. By completion, you will have learned how to greet people, express gratitude, ask for directions, order drinks and meals, negotiate basic transactions, ask/answer with words and phrases, and much more.

Access to Mango Languages is unlimited, so each of the Library’s 16,000+ card holders could conceivably be learning a language simultaneously. The courses are designed for anybody at any age as long as they can read. Go ahead, begin learning another language today!
