Shop with a Cop is a unique program in which Morehead Police officers share Christmas with children and families in Morehead who are in need. Officers and children spend time together, one on one, in an unforgettable holiday shopping experience.
This is just one way Morehead police officers make a positive contribution to the community. Shop with a Cop is sponsored primarily by the Morehead Optimist Club.
Several local businesses and individuals assist with donations in allowing Shop with a Cop to take place. Some of the businesses and individuals are Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Roe Insurance, Packs Inc., Larry Knipp Insurance, Morehead Wood Products, Kentucky Bank, The Citizens Bank, US Bank, Harold White Lumber, Andrew & Deborah Kidd, Richie & Marjie Scott and Charlotte Mullins Insurance.
The program began several years ago with the Fraternal Order of Police but was discontinued with the closure of the local FOP Chapter.
Morehead Police Department employee Kim Fannin took the idea to bring back the program to Chief Derrick Blevins and they were off and running.
The Morehead Optimist Club gladly partnered for this project and provided an initial donation of $1,500 followed by another $500 from bingo volunteers for this year.
Children are recommended for participation in the program by police department members, school employees and youth services centers at the schools. The criteria for the children are: they must be a resident of Rowan County, be in grades K-5th grade, have a social or economic need, have not participated in the Shop with a Cop program in the past, and families cannot currently be receiving support for Christmas through another charitable program.
The event will be held on Dec. 7 with breakfast provided for the kids at the Reno’s where they will be partnered with a police officer followed by shopping at the Morehead Walmart. Parents and guardians will be notified in advance to bring the kids to Reno’s. Police officers in uniform will assist with the shopping and help the children with gift ideas while keeping track of their spending.
