The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) has awarded an additional three years of accreditation for the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Program at Maysville Community & Technical College.

MCTC’s MLT program is one of only seven NAACLS accredited programs in the state of Kentucky.

The program, which was added to the curriculum of MCTC in 2013 prepares students for a career as a Medical Laboratory Technician and can be completed in two years.

MLT graduates are typically employed by hospital or medical laboratories where they perform tests related to the treatment and diagnosis of disease.

Additionally, students often use the program as a foundation when seeking other careers in the healthcare field, such as Medical Laboratory Scientist, Physician’s Assistant or even when pursuing medical school.

“Our students have an excellent job placement rate,” says Michelle Thoroughman, MLT Program Coordinator. “We have great relationships with local healthcare providers which offer hands on clinical opportunities for our students.”

Thoroughman adds that it is not uncommon for her students to have job offers month’s before completing the program and attributes that to the hard work of her students and the high standards that the program requires.

The award comes as a result of satisfactory progress of the program since initial accreditation awarded in May 2018. As a result, the MLT Program will remain accredited through 2023 and continue to maintain accreditation thereafter.
