The 2019 Jerry R. Justice Memorial Scholarships have been awarded to two Rowan County Senior High School Seniors: Carmen Alderman and Emily Hammonds.
Formal, public presentation of the scholarships was made Thursday, May 9, at the school’s Senior Awards Program by J. D. Reeder, Chairman of the Scholarship Committee.
Now in its 22nd year, the Justice Scholarships are given in memory of Jerry R. Justice, a Morehead accountant, who was serving as Senior Warden of Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 at the time of his death in 1997. The first scholarships were presented in 1998.
“We have awarded more than 50 scholarships to date,” Reeder said, “and we are confident that Carmen and Emily will enjoy great success in their collegiate careers.”
The Justice Scholarships are underwritten by donations and lodge fund-raising activities, including a spaghetti dinner and baked goods auction held each year on the first Friday in May.
“The scholarship program has always enjoyed widespread community support, and we look forward to continuing it for many years to come,” said Reeder.
