An alleged murder in Menifee County Wednesday afternoon has put a 72-year-old man behind bars and police seeking a motive.

James L. Downs is in the Montgomery County Detention Center on a $100,000 full-cash bond for the shooting death of an unidentified man.

Kentucky State Police in Morehead said the victim was Downs’ neighbor in the Hawkins Branch area of Frenchburg and the two had been in the middle of an ongoing dispute.

The incident was reported at 2:30 p.m. Menifee County Coroner Melanie Smallwood pronounced the victim dead at 2:45 p.m. An autopsy is pending at the State Medical Examiner’s office in Frankfort.

A firearm was found at the scene and might have been used in the incident, police said.

The release of the victim’s name is pending next of kin notification.

Detective Larry Bowling and the Menifee County Sheriff’s Department are in charge of the investigation.
