The Morehead Dance Academy used summer vacation as a chance to practice their ballet skills in a summer dance camp.
The camp took place July 15 to July 19 with two groups throughout the day, one with children seven and under, and one eight and up. The groups used their time to practice dance moves, make crafts and have fun before the academy’s fall semester begins.
“Before I was here, there hadn’t been dance here in a really long time,” said Lauren Monnett, owner and teacher at the Morehead Dance Academy.
Monnett, a graduate of Morehead State University, has been teaching dance for nine years. She began at Gym Dandy’s before opening her own academy on Main Street after her husband decided to stay in the area to complete his master’s degree at MSU.
“We just emptied our savings account and opened up a studio,” said Monnett.
The academy now has between 50 and 60 students from the ages of three to 14. Although their primary focus is on ballet, there are modern classes for older students.
The academy, which is non-competitive, works in two semesters. The 2019 fall semester is planned for Aug. 12 to December 1.
