Now into our fourth year, the Morehead History & Railroad Museum has been visited by over seven thousand guests representing 46 states and the District of Columbia as well as 19 foreign countries.
In addition to keeping the museum open and operating on a three-day-a-week schedule, we now sponsor an annual two-day model train show, Halloween Trick-or-Treat for the kids, Christmas Open House, Monthly Game Night and Great Paper Airplane Contest.
Recently we have been asked to assume guide duties for the Cora Wilson Stewart Moonlight School and starting next fall we will be hosting a weekend heritage festival of activities, games, reenactments and tours celebrating Morehead and Rowan County’s past.
What follows is obvious: We need help! Our current staff of all volunteers is stretched so thin that additional projects we would like to sponsor are having to be put on hold simply because we don’t have the personnel to bring them to fruition.
Do we want money? Of course we are always glad to receive your donations which are the only means by which we keep the museum open, but right now we need members.
Our meetings are only once a month for a couple of hours, and members can decide how and to what extent they can help. We need guides to meet and greet visitors, and we need folks to help clean and arrange new exhibits and to help with repairs and fundraising and public relations. You can contribute in a multitude of ways.
If you have visited our museum you know what we are contributing to the community. If you have not, please stop by and take the tour, and then please volunteer to help with this worthwhile community project.
Our upcoming monthly Game Night is Thursday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. An evening of trivia, 20 questions and name that tune. Fun for all. Join us and see just one more project we bring to the community. Then why not ask how you can help?
Or call our membership chairman, Jim Mullins at 356-8457, get more information, and volunteer to do your part in keeping the Morehead History & Railroad Museum alive and well.
We need your help!
