Rowan County salutes veterans
Veterans, students and community members gathered at Rowan County Senior High School’s Warren H. Cooper gymnasium Monday afternoon on Veterans Day. Visitors were greeted with “God of Our Father” performed by the RCSHS Band, followed by the national anthem sung by the school’s choir. Scott Barker, center, was a featured speaker and explained the importance of each fold of the U.S. flag when preparing it for display. Also shown are Ronnie Brooks and Larry Porter of American Legion Post 126. A flag was presented to Principal Brandy Carver in honor of three RCSHS graduates who died in the line of duty: Navy Petty Officer, First Class, Edward Earhart, Air Force Sgt. Daniel Fannin and Navy SEAL Chief of Warfare Operator Collin Thomas.
Veterans from all branches of military services gathered at the Veterans Memorial Wall at Freedom Park near the Rowan County Arts Center Monday afternoon. A wreath laying and bell ringing ceremony was held to honor those who served our country. The crowd was greeted by warm temperatures and sunny skies, just a day before cold and snow gripped the region.
