Rowan dominates at Rupp, 45-32

March 18, 2011 —     LEXINGTON – Rowan County’s Vikings went into the PNC/KHSAA Sweet 16 winless in their previous four trips to the state basketball tournament.

    The Vikings, now 28-5, made history here Thursday afternoon, putting down the Panthers of Daviess County, 45-32.

    Rowan was on the state’s biggest high school basketball stage and dominated Daviess.

    Rowan won the battle of the boards over Daviess, out rebounding the Panthers 47-34.

    Egan had 14 points to lead all scorers. Wing had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Hunter had 8 points and 7 rebounds. Townsend had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Cross had 4 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in the contest.

    Rowan shot 38.1 percent in the first half, totaling 35.3 for their 13th straight win.

    “It’s gratifying, I’m happy for our kids,” Thacker said. “Our kids bought into what we’re doing and they’ve worked hard every day and done everything that we’ve asked them to do as a group.”

    Rowan now plays Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Rupp against Wayne County.

  • KHSAA to expand football into six classes The Kentucky High School Athletic Association recently announced that it would increase the number of classes in football from four to six. It is a decision that will place Rowan County Senior High School into Class 4A and join Boyd County, Greenup County and Lawrence County in District 4-8. If passed by the Board of Control at its’ August 21 meeting, the new system will go into effect in the fall of 2007.
