Arla Barnhill Alexander
1915-2008

DAYTON, OHIO - Arla Barnhill Alexander, daughter of the late William David and Rebecca Barnhill and wife of the late Benjamin Franklin Alexander passed away at Hospice of Dayton on July 8th nine days short of her 93rd birthday. Arla was born on July 17, 1915 in Carter County, Kentucky and spent her early life in Ashland, Kentucky. Her husband Frank, who worked for Kentucky Power Company, was relocated to the Grayson, Kentucky area where they resided for many years.

In 1982, following Mr. Alexander’s retirement they moved to Morehead, Kentucky where they founded and operated Alexander’s Red Cottage Gallery. In 1994, following the close of their business the Alexander’s moved to Otterbein Retirement Center in Lebanon, Ohio.

Mrs. Alexander, who began painting as a grandmother in 1963, quickly became a well recognized artist working in many mediums. Although self taught, she mastered the art successfully, painting in a realistic style. Some of her work was commercially reproduced in the form of prints and home décor laminated plaques which still appear periodically for sale on eBay. She was commissioned to do many paintings, one of which was done for the Governors Mansion in Kentucky.

Upon moving to Otterbein she won recognition not only for her artistic abilities but for her poetry and short story writing as well, winning awards in three categories. Up to the time of her death at age 92, she was a prolific artist, painting hundreds of small note sheets and smaller framed pictures which were sold in the Creative Arts Center at Otterbein. Over the years, Mrs. Alexander became well known on the Otterbein Campus and was easily identified by the ever changing flowers that always decorated the basket on her electric cart.

Mrs. Alexander was a member of the congregation of the Otterbein Lebanon United Methodist Church at Otterbein.

Mrs. Alexander is preceded in death by her husband Frank and her sisters Irene and Mamie. She is survived by one son, David Alexander of Centerville, Ohio; two granddaughters, Debbie Adkins of Huntington, West Virginia and Michelle Alexander of Springboro, Ohio; as well as six great grandchildren.

Visitation will be 10:00 AM on Friday, July 11 in the Otterbein Chapel with services immediately following at 11:00 AM. Rev. James Ludwick, a long-time friend, will be officiating. Interment will be beside her husband in the Otterbein Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, OH 45420 or to the Otterbein Benevolence Fund at Otterbein Retirement Center, 580 N. State Route 741, Lebanon, Ohio 45036.
