He married Earla Gardner during a semester break in medical school, on March 15, 1943. During World War II, he served as a physician in the US Army medical corps, holding the rank of Captain, although he did not go overseas. Following the war, Carl practiced general medicine for several years, in Burlingame and Ukiah, California, before returning to San Francisco to work for the San Francisco Coroner’s office and pursue a Pathology specialty at Stanford University.
After finishing his pathology training at Mount Zion Hospital, Carl moved his family back to Ukiah where he set up a clinical laboratory and managed his medical practice for the next forty-one years, serving simultaneously as pathologist for as many as four rural hospitals and Deputy Coroner for two rural counties. In the early 1960s, Carl learned to fly, and piloted his Cessna 182 anywhere his services were needed, as well as across the United States on two long trips. He played an active role in his community and local church, serving as an elder of the Ukiah Seventh-day Adventist Church, chairing its school board for many years, teaching a weekly Bible study class, participating on the building committee and involving himself in community outreach efforts such as the Five-Day Stop Smoking program. He served as an officer or member of the Board of such organizations as California State University at Sonoma, the American Cancer Society and his local Rotary Club. He was a long-time member of the National Rifle Association and the Libertarian Party.
In 1996, at the age of 74, Carl and Earla retired and moved to their present home, in Morehead, Kentucky, to be near their youngest daughter and her children. Carl quickly became an active member of the Morehead community. He helped to organize the Hayes Crossing/Haldeman Volunteer Fire Department and served as its first Treasurer and Chairman of the Board. He trained and qualified as a certified Kentucky fireman at the age of 76. He was elected Sergeant-at-Arms of the Morehead Rotary Club and volunteered with Christian Social Services and Habitat for Humanity. He was made a Kentucky Colonel in 2000.
