Mary Emily Carter Greene
1919 - 2008

MOREHEAD - Mary Emily Carter Greene, widow of Reverend Ted Greene, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008, at the age of 88, in her daughter’s home in McDonough, Georgia. She battled cancer and won!

Mrs. Greene was born in Louisa, Kentucky, on November 17, 1919, to the late Walter Ira Carter and the late Esta Fain Young Carter.

Mary married her high school sweetheart, Abraham H. “Ted” Greene, Jr. on July 4, 1937, in Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Through the years, Mary and her husband lived in Prestonsburg and Ashland, Kentucky; Charleston, West Virginia; and Baltimore, Maryland. Later they moved to Morehead, Kentucky, on June 1, 1953, where her husband had become pastor of the First Free Will Baptist Church on October 19, 1952. Mrs. Greene’s membership remained there.

Being a devoted Sunday School teacher to the junior girls was something Mary enjoyed doing for several years. She sang in the church choir, in a quartet, and in her later years, she sang solos. She was active in the Women’s Auxiliary of the First Free Will Baptist Church, as well as an officer of the local and district auxiliaries. Mary also attended the state and national auxiliaries. Through her involvement with the church family, she formed several lifelong friendships.

For many years, Mrs. Greene enjoyed attending the National Association of Free Will Baptist Convention annually with her husband. She and Reverend Greene were blessed with a trip to the Holy Land in 1980. Reverend Greene preceded her in death on September 1, 1996, after fifty-nine years of marriage.

After moving to McDonough in February 2003, Mary became active at the Heritage Senior Center. She also attended Eagle’s Landing First Baptist Church where she was involved with the Legacy Senior Ministry, Solo Widow’s Ministry, and Sunday School. During her short time in McDonough, she made many dear friends through these organizations.

Mrs. Greene was a homemaker who enjoyed shopping, painting, sewing, and crocheting, all of which brought her many hours of pleasure. But most of all, she enjoyed time spent with her family and friends.

Mrs. Greene is survived by her five children: Ruth Blair, Indianapolis, Indiana; Rosemary (Dick) Wierman, Endwell, New York; Glenna Boggs Mills, Lexington, Kentucky; Theo (Rose) Greene, Smyrna, Tennessee; and Janie (Steve) Dunn, McDonough, Georgia.

Her grandchildren are: Kimberly Blair (Tim) Kaufman, Indianapolis, Indiana; David Wierman, Endwell, New York; Duane (Cassandra) Boggs, Lexington, Kentucky; Ken Wierman, Endwell, New York; Leslie Dunn (Ryan) Dean, Lilburn, Georgia; and Erica Dunn (Matt) Harless, Tyrone, Georgia.

Surviving also are two great grandsons: Kit Clouser, Indianapolis, Indiana, and Mitch Boggs, Lexington, Kentucky.

Mrs. Greene is survived by her brother, W. I. (Lena) Carter, Jr. of Catlettsburg, Kentucky.

In addition to her husband and her parents, her sister Mayme Carter and brothers Clarence Edward Carter and Robert Lee Carter preceded Mrs. Greene in death.

Our family invites you to share with us in the celebration of her life at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2008, at the Northcutt and Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel. Dr. David Starcher, Rev. Rick Stone, and Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr. will conduct the funeral service. Burial will be in Lee Cemetery in Morehead, Kentucky.
