Lorene (Nanny) Hinton Goodwin
1918-2008


MOREHEAD - Lorene (Nanny) Hinton Goodwin, age 89, of Ryan Road, Wallingford, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008, at the Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.Born August 24, 1918, in Fleming County, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Pearl Hamm Hinton. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Rev. Ivan Hinton and R. G. Hinton; three sisters, Golda Newsom, Dorothy Lewis, and Lucille Newsom; and three grandchildren, Marc Johnson, Patrick Goodwin, and Melissa Dawn Compton. Her beloved husband of 37 years, Willard E. Goodwin, passed away March 22, 1974. She is survived by four daughters, Carolyn and Charles Johnson of St. Augustine, Florida, Patsy and the late Rev. Glennis Sloas of Dayton, Ohio, Marian Farris-Mason of Maysville, Kentucky, and Delores (Penny) and Rev. Larry Compton of Morehead, Kentucky; one son, Dexter and Donna Goodwin of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren, Chuck Johnson, Sherri Johnson, Dr. Gwen (Pam) Sloas, Dwana Nunnamaker, Kim Goodwin, Dr. Jan Goodwin, Dr. David Farris, Danica Farris-Jefferson, Larry Compton II, and Heather Compton; and 9 great grandchildren.Other survivors include one sister, Aline Gulley of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, and one brother, Rev. Ford Hinton of Hillsboro, Kentucky.Mrs. Goodwin was a former employee of Randall’s Textron Factory in Flemingsburg, a homemaker, and farmer. A loving and devoted mother and grandmother, she shared her boundless love with so many. People of all ages lovingly referred to her as Nanny. Many lives were influenced by her, and her presence will be sorely missed. Mrs. Goodwin was an active member of the Muses Mill Christian Church for 64 years.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at the Muses Mill Christian Church with the Rev. Jackie Hinton officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

Pallbearers will be Larry Compton II, Chad Nunnamaker, Dale Jefferson, Jackie McRoberts, James Ray Cummins, Darrell Logan, Ernie Gulley, and Jackie Sheilds.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dakota Compton and Timmy Wright.

Visitation is after 5 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Elmer Kinder Jr.
1927-2008


Muncie, Indiana - Elmer Kinder Jr. went to be with the Lord March 16, 2008.

He was born Nov. 20, 1927 in Rowan County, Morehead, KY to the late Elmer Kinder and Myrle Hogge Kinder.

He was preceded in death by one daughter Adele Kinder, and wife Vivian Kinder. Survivors are one sister, Jane Kinder, and husband Glen Curtis, of Beckley, W.Va.; three brothers, Paul Kinder and wife Gypsy, of Wilmington, Ohio, Denver Kinder, of Morehead Ky.; and Gilbert Kinder of Flemingsburg.

He is also survived by seven nephews and three nieces.

He attended the True Light Baptist Church in Muncie.

Services will be at the church Thursday, March 20 at 11 am.

Visitation will be 4 pm to 8 pm, March 19 at Meek Funeral Home in Muncie, Ind.

Graveside services will be Friday, March 21, 2008 at 1 pm with the Rev. Paul Jackson officiating at the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Kentucky.

Vinson Alan Watts, Sr.
1929-2008


MOREHEAD - Mr. Vinson Alan Watts, Sr., 78, of Allen Avenue, Morehead, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 17, 2008, after a long illness, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center.

Born December 23, 1929, at Watts, Kentucky, in Breathitt County, he is the son of the late Leslie and Annie Fugate Watts.

Vinson received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Berea College and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Eastern Kentucky University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army.

He was the Associate Dean of Labor at Berea College before coming to Morehead State University in 1968 as their first Personnel Director. He retired from M.S.U. in 1985. He was a member of the Morehead United Methodist Church.

Other accomplishments he attained throughout his life were past president of the Watts Reunion Incorporated; the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth by the Blue Grass Council of the Boy Scouts of America; Vice Chairman of the E. O. Robinson Mountain Fund Board; past president of the Rowan County Public Library Board of Trustees; and the 2007 Lifetime Achievement Award in Sustainable Agriculture from the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center for his heirloom tomato variety, the Vinson Watts tomato.

Vinson was also active in the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association, including serving as the co-chair of the Health and Insurance Committee and was instrumental in the formation of the Morehead Community Federal Credit Union. He and Patty were members of the Merry Mixers of the Morehead United Methodist Church.

For 55 years he was the beloved husband of Patricia Ann Ascough Watts, also of Morehead. Other survivors include two sons, Vinson Alan Jr. and Claudette Watts of Morehead and Patrick and Patricia Watts of Montgomery Village, Maryland; two grandsons, Vinson Alan (Tripp) Watts, III and Leslie Todd Watts, also of Morehead; a sister, Martha Watts of Scottsburg, IN; two nieces, Allene Miller and her husband Sherill of Scottsburg, IN and Mollie Pearl Duckett and her husband Willard of Bloomington, IN; two brothers-in-law, Dr. James Ascough of West Lafayette, IN, and Larry Ascough of Garland, TX; and a special caregiver, Mary Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mollie Watts.

Visitation is after 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2008, at the Morehead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Nettleton and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery with full military rites conducted at the gravesite by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

Pallbearers: Thomas Albert, Tripp Watts, Todd Watts, John Osborne, Randy Day, and John Alcorn

Honorary Pallbearers: E. O. Robinson Mountain Fund Board Members.
