Students pay new fee to fund recreation center

By CHRIS MCCOY

Despite a veto from the governor, Morehead State University students have begun to fund a $17 million recreation facility, out of their own pockets.

This fall semester began the first semester a recreation center fee was placed on students’ tuition bills. The fee, totaling $35, was placed on every bill for every student attending 50 percent or more of their classes on campus.

The money will first go toward hiring an architect to draw the blueprints, Sarah Sharp, Student Government Association Vice President of Finance, said.

Sharp said although the center is not built yet and plans have not begun, there is still a need and use for the recreation fee money. SGA has already allocated funds from the recreation fee to renovate the bowling alley lanes in the Laughlin facility.

The recreation fee started as a proposal passed by SGA in the spring semester 2005. According to the proposal, SGA, acting as the voice of the students, requested an increase of student fees to help pay for the facility. The fee may increase up to $100 per semester. The proposal was passed by the SGA congress and later approved by the MSU Board of Regents.

Alumni passes to use the center will be granted to current juniors and seniors since the center will not be completed before the students graduate, Sharp said.

The additional fee has caused mixed feelings among the student body. "Most people who are paying for the center won’t be able to use it. I know there will be alumni passes given, but how many people will come back to use it?" Sophomore Laura Ashley said.

"They obviously need it, my little brother will be coming here, maybe it will benefit him down the road," said Carrie Conley, a junior.

Currently, Sharp said SGA did not have a plan for what to do with the money collected from the fee if the funds from the state become available. SGA is currently planning a forum to discuss the fee and listen to student feedback.

Conley said, "Well, somebody’s got to pay for it."
