March 4, 2014 — Morehead State junior Almesha Jones has earned Second-Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors for the 2013-14 women's basketball campaign.
"I'm so happy and proud for Almesha to be recognized as an all-league player," Tom Hodges said. "She is certainly very deserving of this honor. For the entire conference season she played at such a high level and was the best player on the floor for large stretches at a time."
Jones, who had eight games with 20+ points, averaged 14.7 points, a league-high 6.0 assists, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 steals. In 16 conference contests, she elevated those totals to a team-best 18.7 points, 6.8 assists and 3.0 steals.
"For the last six weeks of the season she flirted with a triple-double almost every night," Hodges added. "Whether it was scoring, assists, rebounds or steals, I believe Almesha had as much impact for our team as any player had for their respective team in the conference."
A native of Cincinnati, the 5-foot-6 guard handed out 174 assists, which ranked as the third-best season total in the 43-year program history. She became the fifth player in school history to record at least 300 assists and 150 steals in a career.
During the final 13 games, Jones averaged 17.2 points, 7.3 assists and 6.0 rebounds.
"She played her best basketball given all the injuries we suffered and the multiple lineups we were forced to play with," Hodges said. "That is a credit to Almesha and the maturity and humility in which she conducts herself. She was a true captain for us this year."
Jones compiled three double-doubles. She had 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds at Lipscomb on Nov. 10. Jones scored 15 points and dished out a career-best 12 assists versus Belmont on Feb. 3. She finished the season with a 20-point, 10-assist contest versus Tennessee Tech on March 1.
She is slated to enter her final collegiate season next year with 908 career points.
