MSU alumnus Joel VanMeter named assistant Eagle coach

MOREHEAD, Ky. - Joel VanMeter, a 2000 graduate of Morehead State University, has been named a men's assistant basketball coach at his alma mater.

VanMeter has been a men's assistant basketball coach at Ohio Valley Conference member Jacksonville State for the past five seasons. Prior to joining the JSU staff, VanMeter served as an assistant coach at Chipola (Fla.) Junior College, Iowa Central Community College and St. Catharine (Ky.) College.

"Joel is a great fit for our program," said Eagle Basketball Coach Donnie Tyndall. "First of all, he is a very good basketball coach and recruiter. In addition to that, he is an MSU graduate and has a great deal of pride in our University. We have been very good friends for 15 years now, and I have watched him grow into a top-notch Division I assistant coach.

"Joel has worked in our league the past five years under Mike LaPlante, who is a very, very good basketball coach, and he was Coach LaPlante's top assistant. We are pleased to add Joel and his wife Katy to our basketball family."

During his three years at Chipola, eight of that school's players signed with NCAA Division I schools. The 2002-03 Chipola team advanced to the state semifinals and finished with a 23-9 record. Iowa Central was 23-9 in 2000-01 during one of VanMeter's two years on the staff and had four players continue their careers at four-year institutions. During his one year at St. Catharine, that school won the Region VII championship and earned it first-ever berth in the junior college national tournament.

"I am extremely excited to be a part of the Morehead State basketball family," VanMeter said. "Donnie Tyndall and I met when I was a freshman at MSU, and he has had a tremendous impact on my coaching career. Not only are we close friends, but he has been a great mentor to me during my career.

"Being in the OVC in recent years, I have seen first-hand how Coach Tyndall and his staff have changed the culture of this program in the league and across the Southeast. I truly appreciate the opportunity he has give me to return to my alma mater."

VanMeter is a 32-year old native of Eminence, Ky. His wife, the former Katy Skinner, is from Oxford, Ala.
