Eagle baseball takes 2

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Drew Lee hit two home runs, one a grand slam, and drove in seven runs to lead the Morehead State Baseball Eagles to a 13-8 win over UT Martin Sunday (April 20) afternoon at Allen Field in Morehead. With the victory, MSU took the Ohio Valley Conference series, two game-to-one.

MSU is now 15-22 overall, 5-10 in the OVC. UTM is 5-30 overall, 2-11 in the league.

Lee’s grand slam, a blast over the 395-foot mark in the deepest part of the park, gave the Eagles a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the second inning. His second home run was a two-run shot to center field in the eighth. He also picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

The Skyhawks had jumped on top, 6-0, with two runs in the first inning and four more in the second. Miles Hartsfield hit the first of two round-trippers with Scott Gladstone aboard in the first inning. William Blackmon had a two run home run, and Bryce Carden had a two-run single in the second inning.

The Eagles scored twice in the fourth inning when Lee was hit by the pitch and on a sacrifice fly by Michael Bottoms to extend their lead to 9-6. They made it 10-6 when J.D. Ashbrook led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double, moved to third on a single by Eric Parker and scored on a sacrifice fly by Travis Redmon.

UT Martin cut the lead to 10-8 with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Miles Hartsfield hit his second home run, a solo shot, in the seventh. Cody Terry singled in Blackmon in the eight.

MSU added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth frame on Lee’s second home run and on an RBI single by Ashbrook scoring Andrew Wertz who had reached on a double.

MSU starting pitcher Matt Clark was roughed up for six runs in his two innings of work. But, Clay Muntz (3-0) came out of the bullpen to pitch four innings of two-hit, one-run baseball to get the win. Quentin Morgan pitched hitless, scoreless baseball in the final two innings to earn his fourth save of the season.

In addition to Lee’s offensive prowess for the Eagles, Wertz had three hits, two of them doubles, Ashbrook had four hits in five at bats with two RBI and Redmon had two hits in three at bats with two RBI.

Miles Hartsfield knocked in three runs for UTM, and Carden and Blackmon had two RBI each.

Morehead State travels to Cincinnati for a 6:30 p.m. EDT game on Wednesday (April 23) at Marge Schott Stadium.
