MSU softball extends win streak, now 12-0

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Morehead State collected 22 hits, including two home runs, and got its third no-hitter of the 2008 season Saturday as the Eagles defeated Connecticut 10-2 and Jackson State 8-0, both in just five innings, at the Frost Classic. MSU is now 11-0.

The Eagles scored four in the first, two in the second and closed the game with four more in the fifth to mercy-rule UConn. Sophomore designated player Bianca Cardenas belted the big hit in the first inning with a grand slam - her second career home run. Freshman third baseman Rebecca Butler smashed her third homer of the year to open the scoring in the fifth frame.

Senior pitcher Kari Quinn, meanwhile, stymied the Husky batters. She allowed just two hits and did not allow an earned run to move her record to 4-0 this year. In 24 innings pitched, Quinn has yet to allow an opponent earned run. The only Husky runs to cross the plate came in the third frame via an MSU error.

Three Eagles posted two hits each. Cardenas was 2-for-3 with the four RBI. Sophomore Ashley Archer was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and junior Bri Jones went 2-for-4 against UConn. Butler, senior Brandy Bucher and Cardenas each scored twice.

Against Jackson State, sophomore pitcher Alex Gjevre improved to 5-0 and tossed her first career no-hitter, striking out five Tiger batters over the five innings. The Eagles exploded for six second-inning runs and added two more in the fifth to cut the game short via the eight-run rule.

The Eagles had 11 hits in the contest. Jones had another strong game in the batters box, going 3-for-4 with two more runs scored. Butler also ripped three hits in four plate appearances and added two stolen bases and a tri of RBI, and sophomore Courtney Seiler posted a 2-for-2 day hitting.
