MOREHEAD, Ky. – Morehead State sophomore Alex Gjevre (pronounced jev-ree) has earned the Ohio Valley Conference’s first softball Pitcher of the Week award. Gjevre went 2-0 this weekend in the circle and helped Morehead State win four straight games at the Longwood Lancer Leadoff Classic.
Gjevre, a right-handed pitcher from Billings, Mont., only allowed five hits and no earned runs in 14 innings of work. She opened the year with a 4-0 shutout of Pittsburgh – which was receiving votes in the National Fastpich Coach’s Association top 25 poll. Gjevre struck out five against the Panthers on Saturday.
She returned on Sunday and picked up a complete-game 7-2 win over host Longwood with seven strikeouts and no walks. Two runs scored but Gjevre was not charged due to a couple of MSU errors.
She now has 16 career wins after tying the school single season record as a freshman last year with 14. She also set the school single season appearance record with 38 in 2007.
The Eagles’ 4-0 start is the best in school history.
