JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Freshman Chynna Bozeman scored 22 points Saturday, but the Morehead State women's basketball team shot just 27 percent at Jacksonville State, and the host Gamecocks defeated the Eagles by ten, 54-44. MSU dropped its seventh straight game to fall to 7-18 and 5-11 in the league, while JSU moved to 11-15 and 8-9 in the OVC.
Morehead State was held to just 19 points in the first half and scored 25 in the final 20 minutes, but the Eagles hit just 7-of-31 three-pointers and were out-rebounded 47-38. JSU collected 14 offensive rebounds. For Bozeman, though, it was the ninth time she has led the Eagles in scoring and the sixth 20-point effort of her first collegiate year.
"That's our game plan - to try to hit a lot of three-pointers - and for some reason they just weren't falling today. Our kids feel bad, but we have to just forget this game and work on preparing for a better Tennessee Tech team next Saturday," said head coach Mike Bradbury.
JSU got a 19-point, 14-rebound double-double from Cierra Duhart, while Jolie Efezokhae put in 13 points. The Gamecocks managed just two three-pointers but had nine more shot chances than the Eagles. Morehead State also didn't do itself any favors with 25 turnovers. JSU had 19 mistakes.
The first half became a poor shooting exhibition. After a Brandi Rayburn three-pointer with 6:54 left made the score 21-17 JSU, neither team managed a field goal until the 2:03 mark when Duhart finally hit a layup. At the half, MSU trailed 26-19.
The Eagles have the week off before hosting Tennessee Tech on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.
