Morehead State freshman center Kenneth Faried (Newark, N.J.) has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for his efforts in Eagle wins over Samford and Jacksonville State.
Faried had a double-double in each of the two MSU victories. He averaged 14 points and 12.5 rebounds, along with 4.0 steals, 1.5 blocked shots per game. He also connected on 13-of-22 shots from the field for 59.1 percent.
Faried had game-high totals of 15 points and 12 rebounds, while hitting 7-of-10 shots and collecting three steals, in MSU’s win over Samford.
In the win over JSU, he had 13 points and game highs of 13 rebounds and five steals. Faried also shot 6-of-12 from the field in the Eagle victory.
“With so many talented freshmen in our league this year, this is a great honor for Kenneth,” said MSU head coach Donnie Tyndall. “I believe that because he had six offensive rebounds against Samford and seven offensive rebounds against JSU, he was able to get put-back baskets that led to two double-doubles for Kenneth and to two very good wins for our team.
“His improved practice habits over the past month have led to his being one of, if not the best, freshman in the OVC.”
MSU has won four games in a row and is now 8-9 overall and 6-4 and tied for third place in current OVC standings.
The Eagles are on the road this week for games at Southeast Missouri (Jan. 24, 8:30 p.m. EST) and Eastern Illinois (Jan. 26, 8:15 p.m. EST).
