Bat Cats get first victory

By Denver Brown - Executive Editor

With the score locked at 2-2 and with Abigail Kenney standing on third base, Jasmine Manning connected on a fielder’s choice that brought her teammate to the plate and gave the Bat Cats their first win of the local youth-league softball season.

The girls decked out in bright blue celebrated the 3-2 win over the Fireflies then both teams talked with the local media.

“We really played great with our working together, we really did well,” Bat Cats’ first baseman Shelby Stanley told The Morehead News. “Coach told us we did a good job and we won this as our first game.”

In scoring their first win of the season in such dramatic fashion, the Bat Cats pounded out 20 total team hits. Kammy Rose was strong at the plate, smacking four hits in four appearances with the bat. Emily Hammonds and Abigail Kenney each cracked three hits. Shelby Stanley, Abby Caudill, Erin Wilburn, Kaya Caudill and Jasmine Manning each finished with two hits in the win.

“I knew some of the Fireflies so it was like playing a game with friends and they played good, too,” Kenney said. “We won because we had really good defense. We threw the ball where we were supposed to and we didn’t have any errors.”

Both teams complimented the other and humor dominated much of the postgame interviews.

“It was a good game and the Bat Cats are a good team,” Katie Stevens of the Fireflies said. “Mostly we don’t win that much, but we’re good and we do have a lot of fun.”

Erin Wilburn of the Bat Cats said their coaches have an ongoing battle…

“They want us to pay better attention when we’re in the field – pay attention to what’s going on,” she said. “But they tell us we’re doing better.”

And of course, practice makes perfect – or at least better ball players.

“We do good on batting in practice,” the Fireflies’ L’Shae Black said. “And we practice our hitting and catching. And we run the bases and we throw the ball and we hit – but that’s pretty much all.”
