Great season over for MSU

Softball Eagles take 4th in OVC tourney

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Morehead State's quest for the 2008 Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship ended a few games sooner than everyone involved had hoped for as they fell 5-0 to Tennessee Tech Friday night (May 9) in a lower bracket elimination game, but the 2008 Eagles still took fourth place in the tournament and finished off an incredible turnaround season in head coach Holly Bruder's first campaign.

The Eagles conclude the 2008 season setting a school-record with 34 wins. Appearing in their first tournament since 2000, the current group just did not have enough offensive firepower to get past Tech on Friday. The Eagles managed just two hits off TTU starter Maddie Schmissrauter, who picked up the complete-game win.

Tech also used its explosive offensive game to power past MSU. Katie Betrey hit a two-out, three-run homer off Kari Quinn in the first, and Kerilyn Mongar nailed a solo shot to left field in the fourth. All three of the first-inning runs were unearned after a fielding error. Quinn, unfortunately, absorbed the loss in her final collegiate game. One of two four-year seniors along with Brandy Bucher, Quinn could not have asked for a better team and a better season to conclude her career with. She finished 11-7 in 2008, and ended her career as Morehead State's all-time strikeout leader with 356.

Along with Bucher, senior transfers shortstop Allie Honkofsy and catcher Korey Ellis saw their collegiate careers end Friday. Bucher finished as one of MSU's all-time best hitters in terms of average and also now sits fifth in career doubles.
