RCMS soccer teams blank Bath Co.

By a combined score of 15-zip, the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams of Rowan County Middle School blanked Bath County in a pair of outings, last Thursday night.

The Lady Vikings booted in eight goals in the lopsided romp, scoring four in each half. Taylor Lewis kicked a hat trick (three goals) in the convincing win and Haley DeVaney and Hannah Neeper each had two scores. Maddie Hardin tallied one goal. Christa Iwu collected three assists and Lewis and Hardin also picked up assists.

In the Vikings’ 7-0 win over the Wildcats, Will Bradley spread around four assists and Rhett Hughes and Trevor Newsome each sent a pair of scores past the Bath County keeper. Sebastian Taylor, Bradley and Luke Thaxton each put a shot in the back of the net.

“The guys really played together as a team, they played well,” RCMS coach Lisa Brown told The Morehead News. “Nick Alcorn defended our goal and held Bath County scoreless and Alan Secor really played well on defense, helping with the shutout.”

On Monday night of this week, the RCMS girls improved to 8-3-1 on the season with another victory over rival Russell.

In the win, Christa Iwu was sharp with her shots connecting for all of Rowan County’s 3-1 win. The triumph was the fifth in a row for Randy Wallace’s Lady Vikings over the Lady Devils of Russell.

“Christa scored on a direct kick about half-way through the first half to give us the 1-0 lead,” Coach Wallace said. “But Russell came back and scored off a corner kick to tie it up at halftime – in the second half, Christa got two more goals and our girls dominated play in the half to secure the win. This meant a lot to the girls because Russell is their biggest soccer rival.”

The RCMS teams closed out the 2008 season last night in a rematch with the clubs from Bath County. Look for results in next week’s sports sections of The Morehead News.
