March 18, 2010 — There is a new Dollar General Store located at KY 801 and U.S. 60 and corporate officials renovated a store located at 208 Morehead Plaza.

Dollar General Store district manager Scott Bell said he is very happy about the changes.

“Many (customers) do not want to drive all the way into Morehead to buy bread or cereal and some may not have the gas to drive to Morehead to go to the store,” Bell said of the new store in the Bath County area.

“That area has needed to grow for quite some time,” Bell said. “We wanted to bring more jobs to the area. We are holding a job fair for that location. We will be hiring 30 part-time and full-time employees. We go to smaller communities where the larger companies do not.”

Corporate officials began discussing the possibility for constructing a store in the Bath County area last fall.

“The construction started in November and the store’s opening date is planned for April 2. Our grand opening will be on April 14.”

Bell said corporate officials really do pay attention to suggestions customers write in store surveys.

“When you fill out our surveys we do take them seriously,” he said. “We use the data from the surveys to improve our stores.”

The store will eventually carry items for campers such as gas bottles for motor homes and other camping products.

The new building is 10,000-square-feet.

Corporate officials make renovation decisions on a store-by-store basis, Bell said.

Renovations made at Dollar General in the Morehead Plaza include a new cash register area, new freezers and coolers and more non-perishable and frozen food items, household cleaning and health and beauty products.

“The renovations will not raise our prices,” Bell said. “Our prices are the same across the board. We try to keep the prices at a minimum as much as possible.”

Cal Turner of Scottsville, KY, founded the chain in 1939. There are 8,400 stores located in 35 states. Stores average 7,000-square feet and carry 7,300 core products. There are nine distribution centers and 72,000 employees. Dollar General generated $10.5 billion in sales in the 2008 fiscal year, according to the Dollar General website (www.dollargeneral.com.)
