Attention to roll call: World War II vets

March 22, 2013 —     In cooperation with Morehead’s Corbie Ellington Post 126 of the American Legion, The Morehead News is gathering personal information about veterans of World War II who are living in Rowan County.

The newspaper intends to feature each of these men and women in a personal article between now and Memorial Day.

We had planned to start the series last Friday with a story about Dave Abner but that proud Navy veteran died a few days earlier. To honor him, however, we are dedicating the series in his memory.

Abner was among three World War II vets in Rowan County who died that week, including William Dale Walker Sr. and Dewey J. Duff. A total of eight local WWII vets have passed away in the last 12 months.

Families or friends of living veterans are asked to send their information, including a phone number and contact person, to The Morehead News online at or via fax at 784-7337 or via U. S. Mail to 722 W. First St., Morehead.

If no one is available to send or deliver the information, please call the newspaper at 784-4116 and someone will pick it up at no charge.

All information collected by The Morehead News will be shared with the American Legion and the Rowan County Veterans Foundation.
