Love for kids drives the school bus garage administrator

Oct. 22, 2010 —     Rowan County School Bus Garage Transportation Director Jane Davenport started her career off working with kids because of her love for her own.

According to Davenport, her work in the school system started with her child nearly 14 years ago.

“I had a preschooler and I became an aide in the school system and I didn’t like that very much,” she said. “So I became a bus monitor. That was a blast and I loved it.”

The driver of the bus she was monitoring talked her into becoming a driver as well.

“Dave Muncy was the main driver that I worked for and he talked me into becoming a bus driver,” Davenport said. “I did it and I really enjoyed it but it was hard getting there because it was different and a lot more responsibility but after I made it I’ve enjoyed it and I’ve stuck with it and I’ve driven since 1998.”

She then went on to become a driver trainer in 2004 and became the Transportation Supervisor in 2006 and last summer became the Transportation Director at the garage.

She now runs the day-to-day workings of the bus garage. Davenport makes certain the 41 morning/evening and six midday routes are maintained, deal with parents, parents and principals and makes sure the buses are kept up by the four mechanics on staff.

“I just wanted to be a stay-at-home mom and raise my kids but then I ended up needing a job, got into the school system, and enjoy it because I get everybody’s kids,” Davenport said. “I’ve got kids that have graduated high school that have their own kids now and they still come up to me and I feel like I’ve made a difference there. You have to love it to do it and there all mine.”

“Hopefully (the future holds) a lot more good years of doing what I’m doing,” she said.
