Rowan schools lose spring break week

Feb. 11, 2011 —     Rowan County students will be in school March 21-25, the week previously scheduled for spring break.

In a special-called board meeting Tuesday night, the Rowan County school board passed a motion to make up instructional days lost due to inclement weather.

“Making a decision to use spring break week as make up days is always difficult,” said Supt. Marvin Moore.

“Not one of the board members takes that decision lightly,” he added.

According to a news release, the Rowan County School District has already lost 15 days and four hours of instructional time due to winter weather and dangerous road conditions.

“Just like last year, this winter has been difficult,” Moore said.

“When we make decisions to delay or close school we always try to err on the side of caution. We’re not just thinking about the safety of our students…we’re also thinking about parents driving their children to school, student drivers and our faculty and staff,” the superintendent said.

Last month, the board voted to utilize April 22 as a school day, a previously scheduled holiday.

The board encourages anyone with concerns or questions about the adjusted schedule to call their school principal.
