Bikers give back

The Southern Brother’s Motorcycle Club in Bath County is giving back to the children of those behind bars. The motorcycle club on Stepstone Road in Bath County is partnering with Strike Force prison ministries to provide gifts this Christmas for those that may not get any.

“My ministry and the three other prison ministries get together and give away 10,000 Christmas stockings every year to the children of prisoners in every state prison throughout the whole state of Kentucky and that’s a big undertaking,” Hanshaw said. “That’s easily $7 a stocking and $70,000 a year and that’s all given.”

The Southern Brothers motorcycle club has worked with Strike Force prison ministry since 2005.

“Since we’ve been around we’ve always done charity work,” Southern Brothers Motorcycle founding member “Six-pack” said. “It’s always been our main goal. We’ve had people in jail and prison, not that we’re bad people but sometimes you end up that way. We know what Hanshaw was doing was a good thing, he was sincere and we knew whatever we did, it would be dealt with the right way.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re Southern Brothers, bikers get a bad image,” Six Pack said. “We don’t sell drugs or gun run like you see on television. We get out and ride, we enjoy riding and partying together.”

“We’ve always been charitable and we’ve always tried to show a good face in the community,” ‘Big Daddy’ said. “Everybody’s welcome here, we don’t turn people away. We try to do good for the people and we try to show people that we’re good people. We don’t bother people and we don’t want to be bothered in that way. We take care of our brothers and ourselves. If I’ve got a loaf of bread my brother knows he’s got half of it.”

The members of Southern Brothers motorcycle club presented Hanshaw with a check to help purchase the stockings in October.
