Army helicopter visits

An army helicopter landed on the front lawn of Roberts Village Mobile Home Park Friday morning.

Some residents who live in the park stopped to look at the helicopter. Some of those who browsed at aircraft were amazed by its presence.

“It’s cool,” said James Overholser, as he sat in the aircraft looking at the controls and feeling around on the interior of the craft.

Mike Holbrook, owner of Mar Pat Aviation in Logan, W. Va., said he stopped to visit his aunt Mazie Caudill, of 35 Green Valley Acres, before flying back home.

“We will be here for 3 to 4 hours to visit,” Holbrook said. “We have a bucket operator that we are training in order to get him used to the helicopter and its procedures.”

Holbrook said his aviation company is contracted with the state to do firefighting.

The chopper is a Huey UH-1B and according to Holbrook it has quite a history.

“It was in Vietnam in 1962 –1971,” Holbrook said. “It came out of Vietnam and it was placed in the agriculture business where it was used to spray oranges and grapes in California.”

It has been used in several different movies and a television series, he said.

“It has been in Die Hard, Outbreak, Mars Attacks, The Rock and the China Beach series,” Holbrook said.

His company purchased the copter from a production company in California recently.

“He has been doing this for the past 6 years,” Mazie Caudill said. “He brings a different one every time.”

Before returning to West Virginia, Holbrook took time to eat lunch with his aunt and other family members.
