Local woman guilty of child endangerment

A Rowan County woman who pleaded guilty to child endangerment was sentenced to four years probation Oct. 3 with the first year to be under supervision.

Christeen Mauck pleaded Aug. 8 to two charges of child endangerment when her children were discovered in January playing in a creek while only clothed in diapers in temperatures well below 40 degrees.

The 38-year-old mother was taken into custody Jan. 16 after police received a call concerning the two children ages 1 and 2.

Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Ron Goldy said although he isn’t completely satisfied with the sentence, he is relieved to see Mauck placed on probation.

“It’s not what we were hoping for, but we do have that (probation) hanging over her head in the case that she does something else stupid,” Goldy commented Monday.

Mauck’s children were located on that wintry day about 5:29 p.m. following a call from a resident on Daves Lane who said she found the infants in the creek. The resident and her husband went door-to-door in an attempt to locate the guardians of the children. The couple then located Mauck at her Keisler Avenue residence (in the same neighborhood) and then called the Morehead Police.

Upon arrival, Patrolmen Ben Castle and Brad Gillock reported the children to be very cold and red in color.

Social Services was notified and responded to St. Claire Regional Medical Center where the children were taken.

Following an evaluation, the children were placed into foster care. Mauck was arrested and placed the Carter County Detention Center. Mauck was indicted by a Rowan County grand jury in February. She first pleaded not guilty but had a change of plea to guilty in August.

Mauck is required to be under supervision to see her children during the first year of her four-year sentence.
