Youths learn fire safety

By Tonia Noe-Rose - Staff Writer

The room was dark and filled with smoke as several kindergarten students attempted to crawl on their bellies out of harms way of fire.

There was no fire and no children were injured Monday, but they did learn life-saving tips about how to escape a dangerous situation during the Fire Safety Awareness Training at McBrayer Elementary.

As the training began, everyone stayed calm as the students crawled through the fire-safety trailer filled with pretend smoke.

As part of a safety program, interim Fire Chief John Northcutt and several other firefighters with the Morehead Fire Department are traveling around the county to teach students, kindergarten through fifth grade, how to keep their families safe from fire.

“We want them to know what to do if they are caught in a smoke-filled environment,” Northcutt commented. “We also want them to remember that if they catch on fire they have to stop, drop and roll. Also, when a family exits a burning home they need to have established a designated family meeting area. And once you exit the house – it’s very important not to reenter the home.”

While standing in front of a fire truck, firefighters Jarrod Gilliam, Chris Howard and Alan Caudill demonstrated to the children how a SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) works when firefighters have to enter a home filled with smoke and fire.

The children all seemed to enjoy the demonstration and some even tried on a real firefighters hat. Following the lesson, the youngsters were given a fire-safety packet including crayons, a coloring book and every child’s favorite – a bunch of stickers.

Northcutt said the training also would be given to students at the other elementary schools in the Morehead Fire Department district, with David Clark appointed as fire safety prevention officer. Northcutt advised the community should always remember to change the batteries in all smoke detectors once a year.

He said when the clocks fall back Nov. 2 (daylight savings time) or in the spring, are great times to trade out those all-important batteries.

Northcutt said other county fire departments also provide this type of community service in their fire district.
