Cousins charged with murder

One man is dead while two suspects sit behind bars on a $1 million bond each following an alleged murder by the use of fists Monday on Hamilton Road in the Gates Community of Rowan County.

Eddie J. Robinson, 27, of Morehead died Thursday at the University of Kentucky Medical Center about 11:51 a.m. of injuries he sustained after being allegedly beaten by cousins Michael A. Sparks, 21, of Middleton, Ohio, and 23-year-old Herbert D. Sparks of Morehead, said Kentucky State Police Detective Toby Gardner.

On Thursday morning Robinson was reported to be in critical condition but hanging onto his life. Both men were first charged with first-degree assault but following Robinson’s death, the charges were upgraded to murder, Gardner said.

Just before 10 p.m. Monday police received a call concerning a fight in progress at 91 Hamilton Road. Upon arrival, Gardner and Troopers Josh Pigman and Chris Jones discovered Robinson unresponsive. Robinson was transported to St. Claire Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to U.K.

Following an investigation, Gardner determined that Michael Sparks approached Robinson outside his mobile home and allegedly began striking him with his fist. After hitting Robinson several times, Sparks fled on foot but later returned. He was then arrested and charged with the assault. Upon further investigation, Gardner was able to discover that Herbert Sparks also was allegedly involved in the beating.

“Initially they both fled to a creek area but then Michael Sparks came back to the scene about 30 minutes after fleeing,” Gardner commented Thursday. “The other suspect returned about two hours later and was arrested. We determined that only personal weapons (fists, feet, etc.) were used in the alleged assault.”

Both men are being held in the Rowan County Detention Center.
