Shoplifting: the crime where everyone pays

By Tonia Noe-Rose - Staff Writer

When shoplifters hit – consumers suffer.

Shoplifting has become a huge issue in the area as 37 people have been arrested for the crime since the beginning of the year, said Morehead Police Chief Mike Adams. And when merchants lose items off the shelves, consumers pay the price.

“The number may not seem so large, but at this time last year, we had made only 11 physical arrests for shoplifting,” Adams commented. “We do believe a vast majority of the cases are related to drugs. I would say most of the time they steal to get money to buy drugs. Although there are cases when they spend all their money on drugs and then need other items. So, they steal what they need.”

One alleged shoplifting case has turned over an indictment against 27-year-old Norma J. Brown of Morehead, who if convicted, could face up to five years in prison.

Brown was indicted by a Rowan County grand jury Aug. 15 and charged with theft by unlawful taking over $300 when she allegedly stole merchandise from the Morehead Wal-Mart that valued approximately $349. Morehead Police Patrolman Mark Hammonds arrested Brown June 25 when she attempted to leave the store with the items. She is being held in the Carter County Detention Center.

Adams said most thieves are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs when police arrive on the scene.

When it comes to sticky fingers, stores such as Wal-Mart really take a punch in the purse, he said.

“We are having more high dollar items to be stolen such as electronics,” he said. “We have had three or four people attempting to steal from grocery stores, but for the most part, shoplifters do hit Wal-Mart and other such stores.”

Adams advises against confronting or attempting to apprehend a potential shoplifter. But, he does ask the public to be alert and call authorities if the crime is witnessed.

“Contact the store’s management or call us and we will certainly investigate every call,” he said. “We all want to be good neighbors and good citizens. Just keep an eye out, and if anyone suspects a person of shoplifting, get in touch with the proper people. We do appreciate every call that helps us get the bad guys off the streets.”
