Woman living with MS urges education

By Vanessa Overholser - Staff Writer

Sherry Watson leads a normal life. She is young. She has a job and she has Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

At 30 years old she was diagnosed with the disease on April 11, 2008. When she first started seeing some signs of the disease, she went to see her neurologist to have tests performed.

“My husband and I were together when I first got the test results back,” Watson said. “I asked my neurologist, 'what are my results?' He said, 'I think you have MS.'”

The disease is not fatal for most people. There are four types of MS: Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, Primary-progressive multiple sclerosis (also called PPMS), Secondary-progressive multiple sclerosis, and Progressive-relapsing multiple sclerosis. Watson has the most common form of the disease - Relapsing-remitting.

“I’m new to all of this. My mom has MS. It is not hereditary but it is genetic,” Watson said.

Once she was diagnosed, her doctor wanted to start treatment right away. He wanted to start what is called MS Direct Therapy. Along with these treatments, patients are given special MS drugs that are injected by needle into the body, she said.

“This is a daily injection,” Watson said. “I was petrified of needles. Now it’s like second nature...like brushing my teeth.”

She also takes twice the required dosage of Vitamin D every day because recent studies have shown it helps patients with the disease.

Watson advised that people become educated about the disease. She also recommended that people keep watch for the common MS symptoms. She doesn’t want to cause a mad scare but the sooner the disease is diagnosed the easier it is to treat and the healthier people would be.

Common symptoms include:

•Weakness
•Numbness
•Tingling sensations
•Balance problems, stumbling
•Depression
•Blurred vision
•Fatigue
•Bladder problems
•Slurred speech
•Dizziness
•Bowel problems
•Cognitive difficulties

When it comes to the upcoming MS Walk, she hopes that people would come and participate.

“It would be wonderful for people to come to walk. There are people with MS, families of people with MS, and people who do not have MS that will be participating. It is a good place to learn more about MS,” Watson said.

The MS Walk is Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Don Greenhill City Park. Everyone is welcome.
