Trial under way

The trial of accused murderer James Conn began Monday in Rowan County Circuit as Conn faces charges in the 2007 shooting death of Timothy Scott Riggs of Morehead.

The Florida man has sat behind bars since being arrested in March and charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 29 slaying of 28-year-old Riggs.

Conn’s wife Kathrene Conn, 38, also a suspect in the case, pleaded guilty July 18 to complicity to commit murder. She was released from the Carter County Detention Center on a $2,000 unsecured bond with monitored release and standard conditions. Her sentencing is set for Sept. 18.

On the day of the alleged shooting, Conn, a former Morehead resident, drove to a residence on Ravenswood Road in Rowan County and discharged one shot to Riggs’ chest, according to Kentucky State Police.

Within one week of the alleged murder, the Conns moved to Pigeon Forge where KSP Detective Toby Gardner and Detective Paul Lemaster traveled to interview the couple.

The Conns then moved on to Florida where they were discovered living in a recreational vehicle park in Dade City. They were extradited back to Kentucky March 26.

The jurors were selected as the trial began at 1:30 p.m. Witnesses to the alleged murder, Randi Wallace, Riggs’ fiancé, and Steven McNeal and Katie McKinney, all testified Monday to being at the Riggs resident the night of the shooting.

The trial continues today with testimony from other witnesses, police and forensic experts. It’s not been said whether James Conn will take the stand. The trial is expected to conclude Wednesday. A complete story of the trial will be published in Friday’s edition of The Morehead News.
