Local quilt group receives $79,200 grant

— The Foothills Quilt Trail Committee received a sizeable grant in November for the promotion of quilting and the displaying of quilt blocks.
Jean Cline is the president of the Foothills Quilt Committee. She explained how the committee received the grant.
“We were notified in the last week of November that we got the $79,200 grant from the Paul and Lucille Caudill Foundation. We received the check for the grant on Dec. 10,” Cline said.
She said $40,000 of the appropriations from the grant will go to displaying a sculpture in the new arts center, which is located in the old courthouse in Morehead.
“I think it's great to put this much money into our community,” Cline said. “We have the other funds used for putting quilt blocks on barns, promote quilting and teaching the art of quilting in elementary schools.”
Project Chairman and member of the Foothills Quilt Trail Committee Priscilla Gotsick wrote the grant. Gotsick could not be reached for comment.
The Foothills Quilt Trail is a part of a multi-county and multi-state project that places painted quilt squares on barns and other structures throughout Rowan County. The project is funded by donations of individuals concerned with promoting quilting and attracting tourists into the city of Morehead.
Cline said this grant helps with putting more blocks up. She said the display of the quilt blocks have brought more tourists into Morehead. There are a total of 43 blocks displayed.
She said, “People have come from other places to take pictures of the blocks.”
There are three 4 feet by 4 feet blocks. One of those smaller blocks is located at the A&P Market at Wagoner's Corner at KY 32 East and KY 173, the second one is located at the Ole Thyme Sweet Shop in Farmers, and the third is located on the property of Judy Ramey on KY 801 North.
Other sightings of the quilt blocks are located: US 60, KY 519, KY 158, KY 504, KY 377, Bluestone Road, CCC Trail, Bluebank Road, Dry Creek Road and Lower Licking Road.
Project partners include: Big 4 Lumber of Morehead, Cave Run Arts Association, Gateway Resource, Conservation & Development Council, Grayson Rural Electric Cooperative, The Morehead News, Morehead State University, Morehead Tourism Commission, Rowan County Fiscal Court, Southern and Eastern Kentucky Tourism Development Association, Shepherd's Printing Service, Wal-Mart of Morehead and all of the volunteers of the Foothills Quilt Trail. Also the Paul and Lucille Caudill Foundation.
