Help fund community building

The editor:

Recently a historic site in our community, the Haldeman High School in Rowan County, which was built in 1937, was burned to the ground by undetermined cause.

The school was not in use at the time and owned by an individual. The community was pulled together to try and purchase the building and rebuild what was destroyed by fire.

Once the building has been restored the building will be used for community functions and for emergency shelter. For example, the ice storm a few years ago that left so many without a place to stay for weeks.

Several individuals have incorporated and have purchased the building. A full size gym is still in fair condition, which will hold several thousand people in an emergency.

The corporation paid $30,000 for the property, for which we will have to depend on donations and fundraisers. Reworking the gym will have to be done before we can start using it for community functions.

It is estimated that even with donated help it will cost around $70,000 to rebuild the school area.

Any help we might receive will be deeply appreciated, since we are depending on donations, fundraisers and voluntary labor alone for the restoration of the building.

A thorough search will be made for available grants, from the government, businesses and other agencies to help complete the work and for the operation of it.

Normal expenses will be electric, fuel, insurance, and maintenance.

Thanks from the Haldeman-Hayes Crossing and all other communities that used this school for their education plus the education of their children.

With hope we can restore this historic school so that it can be used by the community again as in the past. Thank you again from the Haldeman/Hayes Crossing community.
