Lack of tutoring period hurts deserving students

The editor:

As a concerned student at Rowan County Senior High School, I am writing to hopefully open the discussion of bringing tutoring back at the high school. Tutoring has in previous years been a class period that works as a study hall for students, but was eliminated this year. I realize that there were problems with some students abusing this privilege and wasting the tutoring period; however, there are many students who used their tutoring period to complete homework assignments, get help from teachers on assignments they were struggling with, and to use the computers in the library for research, assignments, and portfolio pieces.

Many of us at the high school are involved in after school activities such as band, sports, academic team, and other programs. These students are constantly struggling to balance their time in a way that allows them both academic and extracurricular success. They often do not arrive home until very late, and must choose between getting a decent night’s sleep and staying up ridiculously late to complete assignments for school. Several of us also have after school jobs that keep us out late, and while for some students these jobs allow them spending money, for many of us these jobs help provide income for our families.

It doesn’t seem fair to me that students should have to choose between playing a sport or other after school activity or having enough time to do their homework, especially when for many students football (or whatever their chosen activity) might be the main thing that motivates them to do well in school.

I feel certain there must be a solution that will allow students who truly need tutoring to have that time, and at the same time, eliminate students who are looking for goof off time to waste an hour in a tutoring class. Perhaps students should have to have recommendations from teachers before they are allowed to take tutoring. I know there must be a solution to this problem; therefore, I am asking readers to write a letter or place a phone call to Mr. Moore, Mr. Murray and or school board members Brian Riddle, Larry Coldiron, Bill Redwine, Danny Mabry, and Jeff Patrick to ask them to rethink their decision about removing tutoring as an option for Rowan County Senior High students. I believe that “Together We Can” find a solution that is satisfactory to all involved.
