Thankful for palliative care

The editor:

Since November is National Hospice & Palliative Care Month, this is an ideal time for my mother, Shirley Anderson, and me to say a public “thank you” for St. Claire Hospital’s excellent Palliative Care team: Dr. Ann Colbert, Medical Director; Jan Johnson, Social Worker; Rhonda Elliott, secretary; and nurses Judy Buelterman and Sheila Brown. These caring professional have made a huge difference in our lives!

Just over a year ago my mother suffered a devastating fall at her farm near Erie, PA. She spent five days on life support in intensive care and over a month in a rehabilitation hospital. On discharge it was obvious that living alone was no longer an option: Mom used a wheelchair and, occasionally, a walker with assistance. So she joined me here in Kentucky and I am delighted to have her.

Since I had shepherded my daughter, Britt, through 26 major surgeries, I thought I knew something about caretaking. However, I soon learned just how different “senior care” is. Thank goodness we discovered Dr. Colbert and her staff! Each individual is always welcoming, accessible, respectful and prepared. And just knowing they would do a home visit if it’s ever needed is a constant comfort.

Now Shirley is able to take a daily mile-long walk with me in the nearby Daniel Boone National Forest. We take along bags for any trash and recyclables we spot along the way and enjoy keeping “Mom’s Mile” pristine. Mom loves the beauty of Kentucky and the warmth and consideration of its people.

Nearly 85 birthdays mean some of Shirley’s problems can’t be solved. However, she is now pain-free and enjoying life again thanks to the Palliative Care team-- we thank and appreciate them so very much!
