Consider candidates’ stand on the unborn

The editor:

The rhetoric abounds this political season as we hear one politician after another spew forth his or her plan on how they are going to protect the American people. They want to protect our 401k’s, protect us from terrorists, protect the economy, protect our standing and holdings in the world, protect the environment, protect our freedoms of speech and right to bear arms, protect, protect, protect.

All of these pursuits are good and noble, and it’s hard to imagine that any of the candidates are not sincere in wanting to protect all of us in these areas — and many others — which they feel they alone can do through the long, protective arm of the government. They differ in their philosophies and methods, but by and large they at least say they want to protect many of these same things, just in different ways and to differing degrees.

However, there is one member of our society they do not all agree needs to be protected–the most innocent and helpless among us, the unborn child. There are stark and staggering differences among the political candidates when it comes to the protection of the unborn baby, and it’s time we take a close and very sobering look at what the differences are, and what they mean to our society.

When the founding fathers spoke of “inalienable rights” and Jefferson penned the words “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”, there must have been a reason for listing life first. You see, the right to pursue freedom doesn’t need to be protected, and the right to pursue happiness doesn’t need protected if the right to life was taken from the helpless baby before he or she had any opportunity to pursue them.

We all want our investments to be protected, and we all want to be protected from the evil that lurks around us, but can we really trust someone who says they want to protect us in all these ways yet will not protect the life of a precious, unborn baby?
